Animas Project, New Mexico

This is Animas Mountain, marking one of America's last frontiers. It will prove to be Beyond Adobe's home for almost ninety days.

Hmm...did we bring enough water?

Sixty miles south of the nearest interstate, and twenty-six miles of dirt, to the edge of Mexico, this road leads to our new project site.

We have arrived at the Ranch Headquarters, with Animas Mountain in the backdrop.

The three adoberos: Adam, Wyatt and Erik prepare for new day of adobe production. We got to stay in this renovated adobe house, circa 1850s. We were literally straddling the Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico borders at this location.

Set up and in production.

The dirtiest part of the job: loading up the portland in the mixer.

Got adobes?
Our site.

Mixing the mud.

The twenty-inch masonry saw is a real time saver.

Settin' to the string.

Higher and higher it goes.

Masons have one of the highest job satisfaction rates. With this much fun, is there any wonder why?

Jim strkes the joints behind the masons.

A wood ledger is set in the course work to all for cabinet backing.

I'm a big fan of thin blocks, say 3 inches, with fat joints of one inch. It looks great, don't you think?

The team heads toward the bond beam.

The bond beam is complete, made of "ripped" adobes to make these romans. Thank goodness for the saw. Steel reinforced as well.

The roof was added and the territorial style takes shape.

Looking at the east face, with bedroom windows.

The vaulted ceiling above the kitchen and family room.
